Career Development

At Harrison Grierson, we are committed to the ongoing development of all our employees.
For our professional staff in particular, one of the main goals of our programme is to promote a learning structure that supports you to attain your chosen professional goals, whether that is to attain professional status within an acceptable timeframe, develop specialist technical skills or move into dedicated project management. Our development philosophy also supports employees at various stages of their career whether they are graduates, mid career or senior professionals.
All employees are responsible for driving their own development, and with our commitment to you there is a focus on proactively looking for opportunities that will allow you to develop in the competency areas required to help build your career.
Individual Performance and Development Plan
We work with each employee to create a unique “Individual Performance and Development Plan” (IPDP). This document is linked to our Capability Framework, and sets out the standards we expect of people in all roles across the organisation. The employee and their manager devise the IPDP together and this provides an opportunity for the employee to discuss ways in which they would like to see their career progress and to enlist support from the organisation to meet those personal goals.
In-house training
We recognise that so much of what a professional learns comes from working with and learning from colleagues and ‘on the job’ training, there’s only so much you can learn from a textbook.
We have a significant in-house training scheme in place. Individual divisions and offices also have their own initiatives to ensure ongoing development for their specific disciplines.
Professional Associations and CPD
Harrison Grierson has a close working relationship with the relevant professional associations in New Zealand and Australia covering all the discipline areas we offer to our clients.
In some cases, our close relationship has lead to a formal partnership arrangement. For example, the Company is recognised by the Institute of Professional Engineers of New Zealand (IPENZ) as a Professional Development Partner and we have programmes in place that provide pathways to IPENZ competence based membership, for all membership classes.
All professionals are expected to keep their skills current and should demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) by attending relevant courses and achieving a minimum number of points each year. Harrison Grierson is committed to supporting these requirements and assisting our employees achieve and maintain professional membership of the industry bodies that are relevant to their career
