Stormwater Design

Stormwater Design and Integrated Catchment Management

Providing for the control of peak stormwater flows while managing the catchment wide effects and risks of the discharge of contaminants to the environment is a matter of growing concern for many communities and regulatory authorities.  The challenges today require an integrated approach to stormwater design that controls floodwaters and protects our natural streams, wetlands, lakes, harbours and coastal environments.

Harrison Grierson engineers provide location specific expertise in developing catchment and stormwater management strategies for each project. Our planning and design methods integrate conveyance with flood control, water quality, the protection of natural areas and access for the public to recreational spaces.  Our experience extends from improving an existing stormwater system to developing a completely new integrated catchment management plan taking into account the predicted effects of climate change.

Greater attention is now being paid to Low Impact Design to reduce the footprint of urban areas on the environment and to reduce energy and material use and waste. Low impact design comprises practices that utilise natural systems and low impact technologies. Key elements include using stormwater design to work with nature, avoiding or minimising impervious surfaces, minimising earthworks in construction and utilising vegetation to assist in trapping sediment and pollutants.
