Exclusive to Harrison Grierson and a first for the New Zealand market, Extreme Loading® for Structures (ELS) software is the next quantum leap in technology for analysing structures, using the applied element method (AEM).
ELS software is particularly useful in the analysis of older or heritage buildings under seismic loadings where the cost of strengthening is high and large savings can be made.
AEM enables our engineers to model buildings with a much higher degree of accuracy, including the potential progressive collapse mechanism where the collapse of a smaller area of the building causes disproportionate collapse of another. With ELS, we can pinpoint exact areas that need to be strengthened, then evaluate and optimise the retrofit method, leading to a high degree of efficiency in the design of strengthening works.
We’ve already used it, very successfully, for the strengthening of the Hotel St George in Willis St, Wellington, where it potentially saved Prime Property Group nearly $1m in strengthening costs.
ELS software uses the Applied Element Method (AEM) numerical analysis technique to model the interaction between elements in a structure, giving greater accuracy and reliability in the computational results. Exclusively using ELS software, sourced from the USA, our engineers can undertake non-linear time-history (NLTH) analysis for new and existing buildings, progressive collapse analysis, blast analysis and seismic analysis.
The advantage of the analysis technique is greater accuracy with the ability to model all primary, secondary and even non-structural elements in the analysis. This gives greater accuracy with the actual performance of the building and is able to be shown graphically.
Our investigations have shown that the AEM technique employed in ELS gives up to 30% better results than traditional non-linear time history analysis techniques common in the market and 50% over linear techniques. This has the potential to save millions of dollars on complex projects.
We recently used AEM with great advantage for our client, the Prime Property Group, for analysis of the Hotel St George building in Willis Street, Wellington.
Traditional modelling techniques would have ignored the effect of the non-structural infill concrete walls throughout the 1930's 7-storey heritage building, and achieved a seismic rating of less than 30% New Building Standard (NBS).
However, AEM could take the walls and other elements into account and a NLTH analysis was completed.
The resulting 45% NBS rating was an excellent result for Prime Property and meant that the Earthquake Prone Building status could be removed.
Note: Currently retrofits for strengthening the structure to 70% NBS are being developed using the AEM software with cost savings of more than $1m over previous strengthening schemes using traditional software and techniques.
