Crime Prevention and Socially Sustainable Cities

Crime Prevention through Environmental Design, or CPTED, is a crime prevention philosophy based on the premise that if the environment is planned, designed and managed appropriately, certain types of crime can be reduced. Harrrison Grierson has, over the past year, prepared several crime prevention and safety reports covering suburban, urban and city centres in Whangarei, Auckland and Napier. This work has provided a springboard to incorporate both first and second generation CPTED principles and advance a methodology and report structure that has received positive feedback both locally and in Australia at the University of Sydney's Institute of Criminology.

Crime and safety is universally accepted as a significant issue in cities thorughout the country and regularly features highly in both regional and national quality of life surveys. As a consequence, issues regarding crime and safety receive a lot of media coverage and interest. CPTED, positioned at the forefront of creating more socially sustainable cities, provides a strong vehicle for Company promotion through delivery of tangible and cost effective crime reduction strategies.

The Company has recently completed a CPTED toolkit which has been distributed to a range of individuals and organisations involved in the design and management of the built environment. If you are interested in this document or would like to discuss opportunities for including CPTED in your projects please contact Harrison Grierson Director, Andrew Collins.
