Design And Operation Of Tube Settlers At Ruakaka And Turitea WTPS
CONFERENCE: NZWWA 49th Annual Conference, Rotorua, New Zealand, September 2007
ABSTRACT:
This paper will examine the conversion of the existing blanket clarifiers at Ruakaka to tube settlers to increase the capacity of the clarifiers from about 200m3/hour to 500 m3/hr. It will examine the different pre-treatment requirements of blanket clarifiers and tube settlers and will review the very different feed requirements. The design of the tube settlers will then be contrasted with the design the tube settler conversion at the Turitea WTP in Palmerston North. The paper will present water quality data that indicates the differences in performance between the blanket clarifiers before the conversion and the tube settlers after the conversion at Ruakaka. It will also address the advantages and disadvantages of tube settlers from experience at both plants such as access under the tubes and response to flow changes. Operation issues with the plants at Ruakaka and Turitea will be presented including design issues that have led to problems in operation or have meant a higher maintenance than was to be reasonably expected.
