FEBRUARY 2010

The Heritage Destinations Unit of the Historic Places Trust NZ has appointed Harrison Grierson to undertake a nationwide audit of its complete portfolio of buildings that are significant to New Zealand’s heritage.  This portfolio includes iconic buildings such as Pompallier House, Russell, the Melanesian Mission, Auckland, Old St Pauls Cathedral, Wellington, the Timeball Station, Christchurch and Clark’s Flour Mill, Oamaru.

The Heritage Destinations Unit is focussing on the visitation experience and accessibility by New Zealanders and international tourists to this country’s iconic buildings.  While all of the buildings were constructed before modern building codes it is not the Unit’s intention to alter the buildings but to conserve them and to make the tourist experience safe and memorable.

The outcome of the work will be a series of conservation recommendations for each heritage building and will address structural issues, health and safety matters, machinery and other archaeological considerations.

Harrison Grierson beat stiff competition by displaying significant relevant experience planning and designing conservation works on other buildings with historic merit.  The first phase of the work is to be completed by June 2010.
