Intergenerational Living is Promoted at a Community Level
back to Making a Difference
JANUARY 2011

The Intergenerational Living Society of New Zealand and Harrison Grierson urban designers are working closely together to progress a range of housing and community living concepts which, it is hoped, will lead to the realisation of the first of this style of development in New Zealand. Intergenerational housing is a popular style of development in Europe which fosters a semi-communal approach to housing developments inhabited by a mix of younger families, singles, middle-aged couples and the elderly.

The concepts are currently being studied by a range of community and business interests looking at the future of urban living and how individual communities can better support the people that live, work and play in these urban zones. It is anticipated that there will be rapid growth in this style of living, particularly as the "Baby Boomer" generation considers their future housing options.
