Karakia at Pokeno as Sustainable New Town takes shape
MARCH 2010
After many years of planning and design, the small town of Pokeno, Franklin is on the brink of realising its future potential for growth. Working together with Franklin District Council and the community over a number of years, Harrison Grierson has prepared a structure plan and plan change to guide the town’s transformation into a sustainable community with a balance of live, work and play.
On 25 February 2010, Franklin District Council resolved to adopt the recommendations of the Hearing Committee for Plan Change 24. Shortly after, on the 2nd of March, there was a Karakia (blessing of the earth) that preceded the start of earthworks the following day. Local Iwi presided over this moving ceremony that was attended by representatives of the landowner consortium, local community, Senior Council staff, Mayor and Councillors and Harrison Grierson staff
