New Aquatic & Ice Curling Facility awarded to Harrison Grierson
MARCH 2010
The Waitakere Aquatic & Ice Centre Charitable Trust has appointed Harrison Grierson as Engineers for a proposed combined aquatic and ice curling development in Parrs Park, Oratia, Waitakere. The project when complete will incorporate a new 10 lane x 50m swimming pool and a six sheet curling rink, along with associated facilities including, stadium seating, café, gymnasium, offices and staff room shops.
Harrison Grierson beat international competition by displaying skills, experience and expertise in all the requested disciplines, in conjunction with a track record of delivering successful sports and leisure projects.
From a technical perspective the major challenge will be creating the “ideal” indoor environment and visitor experience at the curling rink. This will include designing the correct airflow over the ice and providing for ice temperature variability, adjustable hardness and evenness of the ice, humidity control and the geomechanical issues of permafrost beneath the building.
