Sustainable Designs for Affordable Housing at Hobsonville
FEBRUARY 2010
Harrison Grierson has recently been commissioned by Jennian Homes to provide designs for new housing as part of the re-development of the high profile site at Hobsonville, Auckland. Design is progressing for the first 16 houses on lots of approximately 250m2 and include four generic types, namely front access, rear access, corner sites and “landmark” houses which have unique visual prominence.
The houses are being designed according to clear sustainable design principles established through the master planning process and include a number of innovative features including solar panels, rain water tanks, recycled water systems and sustainable building materials. Detailed design is subject to intensive review by a panel comprised of developer representatives, Waitakere City Council officers and independent urban design experts.
Collectively termed “Gateway” houses, alluding to their affordable price tag of $350,000, these land and house packages will appeal to first time buyers and deliver the intention of the master plan to provide a high standard of sustainable housing at an affordable price and at an appropriate dwelling density.
