CONFERENCE: TOWNS AND CITIES NEW ZEALAND 2010

ABSTRACT:
Urban Design in Town Centres is about planning and designing places in an integrated manner, reducing environmental impacts and promoting vibrant and healthy social and economic activity.

The future resilience of town centres is challenged by climate change and civil emergencies. Urban Design techniques can assist town centre management in preparing for the unexpected.

Town centres have the opportunity to change the negative patterns of development and behaviour that for several decades have been creating unsustainable urban form, economies and lifestyles. Town Centres also wish to understand their risk exposure and prepare for the adverse effects of climate change or emergency management.

Urban Design opportunities exist to create better places, better communities and to provide the ability to adapt to the challenges of the future. Places that provide for ease of movement, safe and healthy environments, inclusive community, ownership, sense of place, strong economies, natural environments etc are better equipped to respond in difficult times, as well as prosper in fair winds.

How might a Town Centre Manager influence these processes? This presentation will provide an urban design toolkit of responses for your use, from quick analysis you can carry out yourself to more complicated interventions that will require professional assistance. The aim is to provide guidance on what you could ask for and be informed enough to implement the results and measure effectiveness.
