Located in Homai, Manurewa, Auckland, the Homai greenfield residential development, designed by Harrison Grierson’s Landscape Architecture team in collaboration with external consultants, aims to create a diverse, safe, and sustainable community.
Bordered by light industrial zones, the project incorporates strategic boundary treatments to minimise visual impact and enhance on-site amenity.
The landscape and urban design prioritise connectivity, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. A pedestrian-focused green spine links Browns Road to a central wetland and natural stream, integrating ‘pause points’ and an ‘edible network’ that foster social interaction, food sharing, and cultural learning. These features also serve as wayfinding elements and contribute to stormwater management.
''The integration of an edible network guiding pedestrians through this development is a real win. Every single plant used either produces food we use today, or has been used in the past by tangata whenua. I love our vision to create a community where people could meet over gathering and sharing food,'' says HG's Design Studio Manager, Lisa Jack.
Public spaces are designed to enrich community life, with seating areas, pocket gardens, and safe pedestrian routes—particularly to the adjacent school—supporting walkability and active transport. Each residential lot balances privacy, passive surveillance, and landscape quality, with open front yards and lush vegetation enhancing the public realm.
Sustainability is embedded throughout, from biodiversity-focused planting in the wetland to the accessible layout that encourages exploration and learning.
The development reflects Te Ao Māori values, promoting manaakitanga and environmental awareness, and was a finalist in the 2024 Property Council Awards for the Multi-Unit Residential Property category.
